Learning and self-awareness
Long-term practice of morning meditation increases grey matter density in the areas of the brain associated with self-awareness, compassion, and introspection. That grey matter is made up of the cell bodies of nerve cells.
So basically, the more grey matter you have in a certain area of your brain, the smarter you will become in that certain area. And in our opinion, self-awareness is the most important trait when it comes to being successful in business, relationships, school, or really anything in life.
Doctors and psychologists often recommend exploring meditation when you are struggling to cope with stress. People often think stress is best dealt with by avoiding the things that stress you out physically, but stress can come from just about anywhere.
It can come from your job, finance, health, family, or friends. But you can significantly reduce your stress levels by sitting in silence for 10 to 15 minutes a day. It will have such a huge impact not only on your mental and physical health, but also on your life.
Stress produces cortisol, which in turn, increases your blood pressure and disrupts your sleep.
Mindfulness meditation decreases feelings of loneliness
A study from Carnegie Mellon University indicates that mindfulness meditation training is useful in decreasing feelings of loneliness, which in turn decreases the risk of morbidity and mortality.
A big reason why people don’t get into healthy relationships is because they are desperately looking for someone, anyone, to complete them, so they aren’t alone.
When you practice meditating, you decrease those feelings of loneliness and incompleteness and you are much more likely to find someone who makes you truly happy.
Self-confidence is something that everyone struggles with. It can be difficult to develop and maintain a lasting positive self-image, but without it, you may struggle every day to avoid periods of depression. Mindfulness meditation can help you build the kind of self-esteem that won’t fall apart when something doesn’t go your way.
Mindfulness meditation is a simple concept. To practice mindfulness, all you need to do is bring your complete attention to the present moment by focusing on where and who you are.
Lengthen your attention span
Another benefit of morning meditation is that it lengthens your attention span. With all the distractions in our lives, this is more important than ever. To put it simply, if you do something called focused attention meditation, you are training your attention span; similar to how you train your muscles at the gym.
If you do this regularly, you will be able to focus on a task for a much longer period without getting distracted. It does not have to be a lot of meditating. If you practice this for just 4 days, it will be enough to increase your attention span.
Mindfulness meditation also has been used as a form of therapy for individuals struggling with depression. Not only does it reduce the production of chemicals in our brains associated with depression, but meditation also fosters a more stable emotional mindset by decreasing the presence of unhealthy behaviors.
Brooding is common among individuals with depression, allowing for negative emotions like sadness and anger, which can be removed by mindfully meditating at least once every day. A study has found those who practice meditation were significantly less likely to relapse and engage in depressive behaviors. So, mindfulness meditation is excellent for improving emotional health.
Meditation helps fight addictions
Now we say the word addiction, we don’t necessarily mean the big addictions like drugs or alcohol. Smaller addictions, like constantly checking your Instagram, checking your Facebook messages or even your emails, or simply being addicted to your phone in general, can be just as big of a problem.
The mental discipline that you can develop through meditation may help you break dependencies by increasing your self-control and awareness of the triggers for addictive behaviors. It also lowers the stress associated with cravings.
For most people, the hardest thing about meditation is keeping your mind from wandering. You are so used to constantly thinking about your work and your responsibilities that it can be difficult to focus on something simple, like your breathing or the present moment.
By practicing this kind of concentration, you are increasing your attention span so that you will be clear-headed and productive.
Daily meditation can have a huge effect on the part of our brain that stores and recovers memories. The brains of people who meditated daily were far better developed than those who did not meditate. Different areas of their brains were developed.
The regions associated with memory showed some of the most prominent changes. These regions were thicker, more intricate, and more active than their non-meditating counterparts. This means they not only have better long-term memory, but also are more efficient at retrieving memories.
Get better sleep
How long does it take you to fall asleep at night? The number can vary, but generally, it takes between ten and twenty minutes for your body to relax, shut down, and go to sleep. What does it mean if it takes an hour or more to fall asleep?
It could mean you are going to bed too early. Difficulty falling asleep can also be a sign of insomnia. Most people use sleeping pills to deal with their sleep issues, but psychologists recommend meditation as a better alternative.
The amount of pain that you feel is often based around your perception. In other words, if you can learn to control your state of mind you can often lessen the amount of pain you feel at any given time.
Daily mindfulness meditation is an effective way to hone that controlled mentality, which will allow you cope with and lessen the amount of pain you feel. Individuals who meditate every day seem to experience less pain.
