The 5 Second Rule Summary
You can build new, successful habits and start taking more quick and effective action in only 5 Seconds!
The five-second rule is a rule which allows you to change your life with only 5 seconds of thought or attention. All of us often run into feelings and emotions of fear and uncertainty which require courage to face into and tackle.
The five-second rule will help you build the necessary courage to take action, and achieve your full potential in life. It aims to allow you to push yourself out of your comfort zone, into boundaries and areas which are far outside your comfort zone.
The mental shift and stimulation due to counting backward are a well known and well researched psychological phenomena known as ‘Assert Control.’ You are distracting yourself from barriers and obstacles, and focusing on moving forward and completing your task.
If you are tired or fatigued and lack the motivation to complete a specific task (say, exercising), the five-second rule asks you to count backward from 5 (five-four-three-two-one), then take the first step (walk out the door!). By counting back, you are subconsciously priming your body and mind to take action, and are eliminating the possibility to find excuses and fail- by pushing yourself to take effect instantly.
Taking action, mentally and physically (rather than pausing for too long to think and process), allows you to quickly overcome any mental barriers which you have put in place to restrict your success. The rule is designed to become a behavior, which you can adapt and repeat until it becomes a ritual, a habit.
Once it becomes a habit, you will find that you can use the rule to overcome any procrastination and obstacles which may be in place, and you will be able to begin, continue and complete tasks and challenges with higher efficiency.
When you try something new, take small steps at the beginning. The more small things you do, the quicker they become big things.
The first step is always the hardest. If you stop for five seconds to think about all of the little things and overanalyze the situation, you are more likely to decide to take no action at all- failing before you even began. By engaging the 5-second rule, you will find that you will push aside any small and petty distractions, and leave them behind while proceeding with the action.
However, if you fail to start and continue allowing the small disturbances to build up, eventually they will accumulate and overwhelm your ability to move on. They will, over time, stifle all motivation you may have built up and make it impossible for you to begin or complete your task.
Motivation is a vital factor in maintaining successful behaviours. However, there is a misconception that motivation is the single determining factor for long-term success. In reality, motivation is quite a rare thing to find, and there are very few things in the world which will genuinely generate a sense of motivation and continually push us to begin, continue and complete a task.
Instead, use the five-second rule to help you commence activities, despite lacking motivation. It is a much more reliable, and structured way to organize yourself.
By using the five-second rule, you find your inner belief and faith and see the ability to control your actions and your life despite ‘not feeling like it.’
Over time, we all naturally develop a habit of hesitating or doubt our own abilities. These small thoughts cause us to pause and hesitate momentarily, causing us to overthink and hold ourselves back.
By using the five-second rule, we can prevent this, and stop holding ourselves back! The five-second rule is all about taking action and making things happen.
Getting the ball rolling!
Changing the way you approach the world and thinking about your problems is as simple as counting down from 5 to 1.
The five-second rule is an exceedingly simple process and framework. It was deliberately designed in this way so that you can utilize it efficiently, naturally and at multiple times throughout your day.
There are merely two steps:
Countdown in reverse from five – five, four, three, two one. Counting forces your mind to stop thinking about excuses, fears, insecurities, vulnerabilities, and distractions. Instead, it forces your mind to focus solely on the goal and task at hand
The moment your countdown reaches ‘one’- take action.
Any action. Walk towards the front door, take a deep breath, find the first step in the direction of your goal and take it!
The rule aims so you can utilize it any time you face with uncertainty or procrastination. As soon as your countdown starts, you are priming and preparing your mind to take action.
You will find that the world slows down, your brain becomes focused, and you become ready to take action, leaping towards your goal as soon as your countdown reaches one.
The five-second rule is designed to change behaviors fundamentally. To train your mind to ignore distractions, eliminate negative thoughts and habits, or encourage you to make positive new habits.
Once you begin utilizing the five-second rule regularly, you will challenge yourself – change your bad behaviors and grow. Another goal of the five-second rule is to allow you to control your mind and thoughts.
Do not be motivated and dictated by emotions and feelings; instead, train your mind and thoughts to face positively into challenges. From this, courage and confidence will arise, and you will be able to take action despite the negative feelings which you may feel.
Self-doubt, vulnerability and other negative thoughts will become part of the past.
