Step #1: Set the Right Goals<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Goal-setting is a skill in and of itself and an essential part of almost any pursuit. Before you begin trying to master something new, be sure to set the right goals. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The goals that you set should be goals that push you and challenge you without being unreachable. In other words, there\u2019s a fine line between too challenging and not challenging enough when it comes to goal-setting \u2013 and it\u2019s up to you to find it. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Step #2: Identify Your Success Factors <\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Once you\u2019ve set your goals, the next step is to start building a plan for how to reach them. You\u2019ll want to begin by highlighting the factors that will lead to success and committing your focus to them. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you are trying to master a new language, for example, immersing yourself in the language by spending time with native speakers could be one of your success factors. Whatever your success factors might be, identify them, and begin taking advantage of them. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Step #3: Create a Roadmap<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

After you\u2019ve identified the factors and areas of importance that will enable you to master a new skill effectively, the next step is to create a roadmap to get you there. Your roadmap to mastery should include a practice schedule as well as the goals that you have set for yourself along the way. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

When you are creating this roadmap, though, it\u2019s important to keep in mind the 10,000-hour rule \u2013 which dictates that it takes 10,000 hours of practice to truly master a new skill. That\u2019s a lot of time, and you don\u2019t want to be overly optimistic when creating your roadmap to mastery. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Step #4: Measure Your Results and Ask for Feedback <\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

It may be true that it takes 10,000 hours to master a new skill, but that doesn\u2019t mean you won\u2019t see an immense amount of progress along the way. Measuring your results as you go about mastering something new will help ensure that what you are doing is working as well as boost your motivation. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

When it comes time to measure your results, though, be sure to ask for outside feedback as well as examining your results yourself. In many cases, a second opinion from a trusted outside source will be a much more honest and valuable analysis of the progress that you\u2019ve made. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
