There is no doubt that controlling our spending is one of the most difficult struggles that we face, particularly when it comes to things that we don’t necessarily need, but feel we have to purchase anyway.
There is nothing particularly exciting about the concept of financial stability, but as the years pass and we move towards our professional and personal milestones, it will be the foundation upon which our future is built.
In the society we live in, we’re encouraged to consume things for the sake of consuming them, not because that they offer us any sort of benefit, fulfillment or satisfaction.
By breaking away from and changing this mindset, however, we can focus our hard-earned money on those things that actually mean something to us. In this comprehensive and in-depth guide, we’ll be looking at the changes you need to make in order to live well whilst spending less.

Record Your Expenses
Recording each and every one of your expenses is an incredibly effective way for you to understand not only how much you are spending, but also what you are spending on.
From rent and utilities, groceries and takeaway, clothing and electronics, to subscription services and entertainment, it is essential that you record all of your expenses so that you can see your weekly, monthly, and annual expenditures. It can be easy to lose track of your expenses, and even though you might not be making particularly big purchases, they can accumulate quickly.
Set Something Aside Every Month
No matter how small or large the amount, it is critical that you set something aside every month. Make sure that you create a savings account, or a safe space in your home, where you deposit money every time you are paid.
This will not only make it easier for you to control your spending, but also you will be building a comfortable financial cushion for yourself in the weeks, months, and years ahead. Even a seemingly insignificant amount of money will grow overtime, and whenever you see your savings grow, you’ll feel a surge of serotonin, which no purchase can equal.
There’s Always a Cheaper Option
In this day and age, the price of something doesn’t necessarily correspond with its quality. We’re brought up to think that anything that is branded is immediately more trustworthy and reliable, but this isn’t always the case.
And you don’t have to compromise on the things you love either. If there is an expensive purse or pair of trainers that caught your eye, there will probably be a much more affordable and just as functional option somewhere else. You may be partial to a coffee from Starbucks or Costa, but there’s every chance that you can make a coffee, which is just as delicious, and far cheaper, from home.
Be Creative With Your Entertainment
After a long day at school or work, there is nothing more fulfilling than some light-hearted enjoyment with your family and friends. The problem is, however, that going to restaurants, malls, cinemas, entertainment venues, vacations, and holidays abroad can become expensive and unsustainable, especially if it something you’re doing regularly.
Instead, be creative! You could replace the restaurant with a fun-filled cooking session at home with the people you love or a potluck, or the cinema for some Netflix and popcorn with your significant other. And if you don’t want to spend so much on a trip abroad, this is the perfect opportunity for you to embark on a staycation and explore the amazing attractions near you.
Decide Your Budget
When it comes to regular expenditures, there is rent, utility bills, groceries, car insurance, transport, clothing, electronics, pets, and house wares – to name a few. Everyone’s financial situation is unique, depending on their location, circumstances and needs, and this is why there is not much value to be found in looking online for precise statistics and numbers when it comes to deciding on your budget.
By carefully examining your earnings and expenditures, you can figure out how much you spend on essentials. Whatever is left, make sure that you save it, and if anything is left from your ‘essentials budget at the end of the month, you can either save that as well or buy yourself a small treat as a reward!
The Seven Day Rule
Impulse buying can be a crippling problem, especially with online market websites such as Amazon and eBay – where you can browse through virtually millions of products without even having to leave your home. The seven day rule is a useful tip for anyone who is prone to these troublesome impulse purchases.
If you see something you think you’ve fallen in love with, then wait for seven days before you actually purchase it. This is an effective rule that should stop you from buying unnecessary things, because we usually decide to purchase things emotionally. A week should be enough time for you to settle into a more rational and logical frame of mind.
The Pursuit of Financial Freedom
The most profound realization you’ll probably ever make is that you are the one who brings true purpose and meaning to your life; with the right mindset, your happiness will be completely independent of what you do or do not have.
And when you spend less, it doesn’t mean compromising on the comforts and the luxuries that you enjoy, instead critically assessing and considering every financial decision you make so that it is of greatest benefit to you, your circumstances, and, of course, your future.
At first it might sound like a paradox, but the truth is, spending less is crucial to living a truly content and fulfilled life. There is no feeling more empowering then being in ultimate control of your finances, completely independent from the influence of emotions, fleeting trends, and societal expectations.
By managing your budget, you’ll also ensure that you have enough for the most significant aspirations and ambitions in your life, paving the way for your long-term and ongoing success.
