Step #1: Set the Right Goals

Goal-setting is a skill in and of itself and an essential part of almost any pursuit. Before you begin trying to master something new, be sure to set the right goals.

The goals that you set should be goals that push you and challenge you without being unreachable. In other words, there’s a fine line between too challenging and not challenging enough when it comes to goal-setting – and it’s up to you to find it.

Step #2: Identify Your Success Factors

Once you’ve set your goals, the next step is to start building a plan for how to reach them. You’ll want to begin by highlighting the factors that will lead to success and committing your focus to them.

If you are trying to master a new language, for example, immersing yourself in the language by spending time with native speakers could be one of your success factors. Whatever your success factors might be, identify them, and begin taking advantage of them.

Step #3: Create a Roadmap

After you’ve identified the factors and areas of importance that will enable you to master a new skill effectively, the next step is to create a roadmap to get you there. Your roadmap to mastery should include a practice schedule as well as the goals that you have set for yourself along the way.

When you are creating this roadmap, though, it’s important to keep in mind the 10,000-hour rule – which dictates that it takes 10,000 hours of practice to truly master a new skill. That’s a lot of time, and you don’t want to be overly optimistic when creating your roadmap to mastery.

Step #4: Measure Your Results and Ask for Feedback

It may be true that it takes 10,000 hours to master a new skill, but that doesn’t mean you won’t see an immense amount of progress along the way. Measuring your results as you go about mastering something new will help ensure that what you are doing is working as well as boost your motivation.

When it comes time to measure your results, though, be sure to ask for outside feedback as well as examining your results yourself. In many cases, a second opinion from a trusted outside source will be a much more honest and valuable analysis of the progress that you’ve made.
